Q:  What makes Oxford School of Music so outstanding?

A:  Teaching music is our only business. We are not a retail operation with additional music instructions.

The goal of Oxford School of Music is for the students to enjoy the musical experience and to reach their goals. Each student is an individual. Our instructors find out how the student learns best and use the tools necessary to accomplish the goal. While there are certain fundamentals that all musicians need, we recognize that each person learns differently.

Q:  Do you encourage parental involvement in the learning process?

A:  Yes.  Even if you don't have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice.  By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per week, the student will progress.  Once each month we encourage parents to sit in on their child's music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a songs should sound and to observe the teaching methods being used.

Q:  Are recitals a requirement?

A:  We always encourage students to participate in recitals, but participation is not mandatory. We feel that it is very helpful if the student has goals.  An approaching recital date can encourage practice and progress. The recitals are a great place to get used to performing since everyone there is in the same boat! Watching other students perform can aid in motivation. It has been proven that performance skills transfer to other areas such as public speaking.

Q:  How long does it take to learn an instrument?

A:  With regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long-term basis because they want to constantly improve and, most importantly, they find the lessons enjoyable.

Q:  Must I have a piano at home to take piano lessons?

A:  It is ideal if you do have a piano at home but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard to practice on.  Many of our students buy electric keyboards to practice on at home.  We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch sensitive response.  A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play more quietly, similar to a real piano.

Q:   I have had musical instruction. Do you teach advanced students?

A:  Many of our students are adults with different skill levels. Our staff is experienced at teaching all levels.  Let us know if you have prior experience or need help with a particular issue.

Q:  What is the earliest age that a child can start learning an instrument?

A:   There is no specific age. Each child is different. Temperment and maturity are the most important attributes needed. If a child is forced too early it can be detrimental to their attitude and future development. We require an understanding of counting and the alphabet. It is best to schedule an interview here at Oxford School of Music.  Fun and success are the most important factors. At Oxford, We begin to teach children between the ages of 5 and 10. That is a big spread and there is no consistant factor other than desire and commitment.

Q:  Do I need a full drum set to take drum lessons?

A:  No you do not need a full drum set to start drum lessons.  Students can start lessons by using a practice pad.  This is a small dinner plate sized pad that costs $20-$30, and it is used for practicing basic drum rhythms.
